SEND
At Bankwood Primary School we value the abilities and achievements of all our pupils, and are committed to providing for each pupil, the best possible environment for learning. Inclusion is at the heart of our school. We recognise that parents understand their children and their opinions need to be valued and listened to, working in partnership with school to support the needs of all children.
We believe that all children should have access and a common entitlement to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum, and to be fully included in all aspects of life. We believe that all children should be equally valued in school. We will strive to eliminate prejudice and discrimination, and to develop an environment where all children can flourish and feel safe.
We encourage all members of our school community to be aware of their own strengths and needs, and to understand how they can overcome difficulties, including being able to identify who can support them.
We recognise that many pupils at some point in their school life may experience difficulties which affect their learning and recognise that these may be long or short term. We aim to identify these needs as they arise and provide teaching and learning contexts which enable every child to achieve his/her full potential.
If you want to discuss any concerns, please speak to your child’s class teacher in the first instance. You may also contact Ms Towers who is our Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENDCo).
The SENDCo’s Role
The SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator) is a teacher who coordinates provision for children with additional needs that impact on their ability to learn. This can include:
– Observations
– Referrals to outside agencies
– Supporting class teachers and TAs with what provision can be put in place
– Organising support plan and MyPlan review meetings
– Helping with the EHCP (Educational, Health and Care Plan) process
Reviews
If your child in on the SEN register, they will have either a support plan, Extended Support Plan or EHCP. These consist of outcomes that are specific to the child and are broken down into manageable steps to make progress. The plans are reviewed 3 times a year. It is important that parents or carers attend review meetings as it is their opportunity to contribute ideas, thoughts and feelings towards their child’s educational provision.
Support plans will be reviewed in Autumn (during parents evening), Spring (during parents evening) and Summer.
MyPlans or EHCPs will be reviewed each term.
If you have any questions or concerns about the special educational needs provision for your child at Bankwood Primary, please contact our school SENDCo (Mrs Amanda Towers). Any complaints relating to special educational needs provision at Bankwood Primary in the first instance, should be directed to our SENDCo (Mrs Amanda Towers) and will be dealt with in line with our school complaints policy. This can be accessed via our Policy Section.
