Admissions

Reception to Y6
Bankwood Primary has adopted Sheffield’s policy for admissions and applications for places will be made in accordance with the ‘Coordinated Admission Arrangements’ which forms part of the Local Authority’s (LA) published admission arrangements. We have a PAN (published admissions number) of 60 children per year group.

If you would like to apply for a place at Bankwood Primary please contact Sheffield Council School Admissions using the link below. Once you have been allocated a place, please contact our Office Team to find out more and organise a visit to our school.

2 year old nursery
Bankwood Primary offers free childcare for two year olds through our two year old provision. The government is currently funding childcare for 2 years olds for certain groups. For further details, or to check if you are eligible, visit the education section on www.sheffield.gov.uk. To place your child on our waiting list please ask at the main school office for a pupil admission form.

Nursery (3 and 4 year olds)
Our Nursery is a 30 place setting that offers 3 hour sessions both morning and afternoons and 2.5 days at either the beginning or end of the week. Pupils can access 15 hours under the FEL (Free Early Learning) Funding. We also offer 30 hour provision for eligible families. Admissions are handled through our Main Office. For further information or to arrange a visit, please contact the school office.

After School Activities

We are pleased that Samba Sports Coaching Ltd deliver an afterschool club at Bankwood Primary School Wednesday – Thursday. The clubs start at 3:10 pm and end at 4:10 pm.

Samba Sports Coaching Ltd use an online booking system (class4kids) for all afterschool clubs. The booking system is nationally recognised and follows all GDPR and data protection guidelines. The software automatically creates registers for the club, provides staff with all the important information about your child, allowing us to follow appropriate safeguarding procedures. It is compulsory that all children who attend our club book directly through our online system. The session is school funded, which means there will be no cost applied, but it is important to still register your child for safeguarding purposes and limited places available.

Attendance

Attendance Information for Parents and Carers
Why is attendance and punctuality important?
Regular attendance and good punctuality are vital to the educational achievements and personal development of your child. Pupils who attend regularly can fully benefit from the academic, personal and social opportunities offered to them at Bankwood Primary School.

Improving attendance is everyone’s responsibility!
We have high expectations for all pupil’s attendance and we expect your child to be OTIS – On Time In School. We want pupils here, on time and ready to learn each day.
We celebrate all children who achieve 100% and aim for all children to be above 96.5%.
There is a link between good school attendance and high level attainment. Regardless of the reason, if your child is absent from school it will impact their learning.

Punctuality matters!
When your child arrives late at school, they miss the teacher’s instructions and the introduction to the lesson. Your child may also feel embarrassed at having to enter the classroom late. Frequent lateness can add up to a considerable amount of learning lost and can seriously disadvantage your child.

How should I notify school if my child is absent?
● Contact the school on the first day your child is absent, either by telephone (01142396711) or in person, stating the reason for absence and the expected date of return. If we do not have a reason for non attendance, expect a phone call or home visit.
● If an absence continues, you must contact the school office again each day your child is unable to attend.

If your child’s absence has already been highlighted as a cause for concern, you may be asked to provide evidence to support the absence. This will be in the form of an appointment card for a medical appointment, an appointment text sent to a parent or proof of prescribed medication. This should be taken to the office in order for the absence to be authorised.

If a child is feeling mildly unwell but the symptoms are manageable with non-prescribed medication, such as Calpol for example, we will not authorise a full day’s absence. We encourage parents to treat their children at home and then bring them into school, if they are well enough to do so.

Absence will only be authorised when a satisfactory reason has been provided.

We work closely with Sheffield City Council to improve attendance at Bankwood. You may be asked to speak with an attendance officer if we have concerns about your child’s absence.

Holidays During Term Time

Our school follow Sheffield City Council Term Time Leave Guidance. All requests for term time leave must be made to the Head Teacher by filling in the Term Time Leave Request Form, which is available from the school office.
Only in exceptional circumstances will leave be authorised. Unauthorised term time leave of 5 days or more may result in a penalty (fine) in the first instance, increasing to prosecution (legal action) for repeat offences. Any prosecution is carried out by Sheffield LA on behalf of the school. If queries are raised about any term time leave, you may be asked to provide evidence of the days taken, for example flight tickets or accommodation receipts.

If the school has reason to believe a term time leave had been taken without request, it is your responsibility to prove otherwise (doctors appointment card, proof of medication etc.). Circumstantial evidence, such as children returning to school with a sun tan, children talking about being away on holiday, or members of the community telling us that you’re on holiday, can and will be used as evidence of unauthorised term time leave. You will be informed by letter as to the outcome of your term time leave request.

Exceptional Circumstances

Situations the headteacher may consider exceptional could include major family events, such as the wedding of a parent, or visits to close relatives who may be terminally or seriously ill. Birthdays and shopping trips are not exceptional circumstances and neither is the lower cost of holidays during term time. It is very unlikely a leave of absence will be granted for the purposes of a family holiday. Leave during SATS tests in Y6 or at the start of a new term will not be authorised.

Home Learning

We expect all children within school to continue their learning at home where necessary. All children are given a reading book and should be practicing their reading skills each night. Rewards and recognition are given to those children who take part in daily reading at home. Each week children will have spelling and times table/number bonds home learning to complete.

On a termly basis children are sent home with a home learning grid. This is a grid with multiple options on for the children to choose a challenge from. Children should aim to complete a challenge each week. The challenges are designed to support children in revisiting and embedding the learning that has been introduced within their class.

Home learning grids can be accessed from Class Dojo, from your child’s class teacher or from the school office.

Remote Education

At Bankwood Primary we are committed to providing a high quality education to all our children within school.

However there may be occasions where we need to significantly adapt the way we deliver our curriculum as well as making adaptations to the practicalities of school in order to keep children, families and staff safe.

Please access the resources below to support you on the FIRST days of remote learning.

Further to this, remote learning will be provided via Google Classroom. If you do not have the login details for your child, please contact the school office.

In addition to the resources below please also read at home with your child each day.

School Meals

All of our school meals are cooked freshly on site. Children have a choice of four meal options including two hot main meals, jacket potato with filling and a sandwich option. All meals are served with seasonal vegetables or salad from the self service salad bar. Fresh fruit is available every day and drinking water is available for all children too.

All Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils are entitled to free school dinners. Please take this opportunity to encourage your child to stay for a school lunch.

All school dinners must be paid for in advance. We cannot order meals without payment.

School Street

Our School Street
By closing the road outside our school to traffic at the busiest times of the school day (when children are arriving and leaving), we are helping to make our school entrance safer, quieter and with cleaner air to breath for everyone. Bankwood Close will be closed to all non-authorised traffic between: 8.15-9.15am and 2.45-3.45pm
Permit holder residents and Blue Badge holders will be authorised access. Our School Street will be marshalled by staff; please be respectful and kind to those helping us all stay safe. If you are interested in being a volunteer who would like to help support with marshalling this in the future, please let us know.

What can parents do?
We ask all parents to encourage their children to come to school in an active way – walking, cycling or scooting. If a car is necessary, please consider parking this further away and walking the short remaining distance to school.

One Way Traffic
It will help the community if everyone respects a 1-way traffic system if they choose to drive to school: entering Bankwood Road from the lower end of Blackstock Road and leaving at the top of Bankwood Road.
